Top mind blowing facts about the IIT’s

When you hear of IIT, what strikes your mind first? Well before you answer the question, it is a dream for everyone to enrol in IIT’s. IIT is the dream for every aspirant in India. Many of us know that IIT’s are best and most demanded technical institutes and engineering colleges in India and globally recognized all across the world-wide. IIT started their journey even before India got its independence. After the Second World War, our leaders along with British started planning for the formulation of best education institutes in India. With this vision, the first IIT was set-up in 1950 in Kharagpur, now known as IIT-Kharagpur. After this, for all other IITs to be designated as same, the Parliament of India passed an Act in 1961, which now governs the formation of all the IITs in India.

IIT’s have national importance as they produced successful engineers, researchers, scientists and founders of many organizations. All the Titians immensely contribute in the success of world. Much of the credit goes to the environment, state of the art infrastructure, best faculty and world class facilities. However, there are some interesting but unknown facts about the premier IIT institutes that we bet you are unaware of.


The first batch of IIT students consisted entirely of boys who had been among the top ten rankers in their universities. Students were admitted basis of their academic record and interview.

The 'first IITian' was J. K. Chandra. At the first convocation of IIT Kharagpur in 1956, Civil Engineering students were called up to receive their degrees. Chandra had topped Civil Engineering so he received his degree before anyone else. The numeral digit printed in his degree certificate is 1.

In 1991, Mr. Vinod Gupta became the first IITian to donate the money to his alma mater. He set up a trust to create the Vinod Gupta School of Management on the Kharagpur campus.

In 1981, IIT-Bombay admitted a girl student for the first time in Mechanical Engineering. It was the same year when first woman metallurgist in Indian history graduated from IIT.

Another interesting yet lesser known fact is that the Delhi Technological University (DTU) is the mother institute of IIT Delhi. The Chemical Technology and Textile Technology departments of DTU’s were shifted to the new campus of IIT Delhi to start the new chapter of IIT Delhi.
