When you hear of IIT, what strikes your mind first? Well
before you answer the question, it is a dream for everyone to enrol in IIT’s. IIT
is the dream for every aspirant in India. Many of us know that IIT’s are best and
most demanded technical institutes and engineering
colleges in India and globally recognized all across the world-wide. IIT
started their journey even before India got its independence. After the Second
World War, our leaders along with British started planning for the formulation
of best education institutes in India. With this vision, the first IIT was set-up in 1950 in Kharagpur, now known as IIT-Kharagpur. After this, for all other
IITs to be designated as same, the Parliament of India passed an Act in 1961,
which now governs the formation of all the IITs in India.
IIT’s have national importance as they produced successful
engineers, researchers, scientists and founders of many organizations. All the Titians
immensely contribute in the success of world. Much of the credit goes to the environment,
state of the art infrastructure, best faculty and world class facilities. However,
there are some interesting but unknown facts about the premier IIT institutes
that we bet you are unaware of.
The first batch of IIT students consisted entirely of boys
who had been among the top ten rankers in their universities. Students were
admitted basis of their academic record and interview.
The 'first IITian' was J. K. Chandra. At the first
convocation of IIT Kharagpur in 1956, Civil Engineering students were called up
to receive their degrees. Chandra had topped Civil Engineering so he received
his degree before anyone else. The numeral digit printed in his degree
certificate is 1.
In 1991, Mr. Vinod Gupta became the first IITian to donate the
money to his alma mater. He set up a trust to create the Vinod Gupta School of
Management on the Kharagpur campus.
In 1981, IIT-Bombay admitted a girl student for the first
time in Mechanical Engineering. It was the same year when first woman
metallurgist in Indian history graduated from IIT.
Another interesting yet lesser known fact is that the Delhi
Technological University (DTU) is the mother institute of IIT Delhi. The Chemical
Technology and Textile Technology departments of DTU’s were shifted to the new
campus of IIT Delhi to start the new chapter of IIT Delhi.
These are the interesting but lesser known facts about IIT’s.
