Private Universities OR Deemed Universities – Which is best?

Private Universities OR Deemed Universities – Which is best

In the Indian higher education sector, universities are classified into four types depending on the manner in which they were set-up. The offered four Universities are –

Central University

State University

Deemed University and

Private University

One must be thinking what the difference between these universities. In practical senses, they have lot of differences. These universities are categorized on several bases like grade system, education standard, grade by the All India Education Council, courses etc.

In general words, a deemed university is a college or institution with a name of the university whereas in the category of private university a range of colleges and institutes comes. Since there are many institutes in India, it is advisable to be cautious from fake universities. Recently in January 2010, Ministry of HRD, India has derecognized 44 Deemed Universities due to major faults found on their educational system. So always check the recognition before choosing any of the college or university.

Here I am discussing you the main differences between deemed university and private university:

Rules and Regulations:

The main area of difference between the deemed universities and private Universities are in the rules and regulations that is required to be followed. The private Universities have to follow a lot of strict rules and norms which the Deemed universities don’t. Deemed Universities have the right to carry on their own educational affairs such as conducting the examination and setting up the syllabus. However, the private Universities have to consider a particular time for all the colleges under it.

Fee Structure:

Another difference between private universities and deemed universities are in fee structure. The fee structure in deemed universities are more flexible as compared to the Private universities.

Status:

The status of these deemed universities are accorded by the UGC (University Grants Commission). Section 3 of the UGC Act, provides for the conferring of this status of autonomy granted to excellent performing institutes and departments of diverse universities in India. For an institution to be given the status of a private university, the state legislature conferring the status has to pass an act by which the institution will receive the status of a university. Private universities have to be recognized by the UGC so that the degrees awarded by them have to be of any value.

Course Structure:

A deemed university cannot be run only by offering course in diverse subjects. There is a research field that runs under the university. But this condition is not necessary for the private Universities. If you are planning to do graduation or post-graduation in engineering, management, medical, physics, maths etc, and then you can opt for any of the recognized university, private or deemed. But if you want to go in the research field from some definite sector then Deemed universities may be a good choice.

Colleges under deemed university and private university:

The Birla Institute of Technology and Science at Pilani in Rajasthan, which is funded and run by the Birla Group Trust, became an officially recognised university in 1964. National Institutes of Technology (formerly known as Regional Engineering Colleges), Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Symbiosis International Education Centre, Pune comprising Symbiosis Institute of Computer Studies and Research, Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Symbiosis Society's Law College, NarseeMonjee Institute of Management Studies, Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore are deemed universities.
